Folklore says witch balls originated in 18th century England and then made their way into New England, but they are thought to be much older than this. Traditionally and now, witch balls are believed to help trap negative witches spells, evil spirits and ill fortune protecting the vibrations and energy of the home or space. By hanging the hollow glass balls in windows, wayward spirits are mesmerized by the light and colorful glass, becoming trapped in the web-like strands in the glass ball. Likewise they can be used for scrying by gazing into the reflective depths of the glass ball.
